Beautiful rooms with luxury fittings and museum quality furnishings

The Heritage house has been my favorite Museum in Bhutan for some time - this was my third visit. Recently they have converted a number of family rooms into guest rooms to support the museum. The bath and bed fittings ar imported from Switzerland and are of highest qualitym while the rooms are masterpieces of traditional Bhutanese style and craft.

I keep on visiting this wonderful place again and again! It is surely one of my favourite places in Bhutan - because of the uniqueness of the place and the warm hospitality of its owners.

A Special Location

My wife and I realized that we were in for a special experience the moment that we arrived. Check in was quick and efficient. Since we arrived at lunch time, we immediately sat down in the small dining room. The owner, a well traveled gregarious host, welcomed us warmly just as she did all other guests. Lunch was delicious and the service was impeccable. The owner admitted that her staff was still in training. The staff are local women who live in the small village just outside the gates of the complex. Ogyen Choling Heritage House is a 120 year old feudal estate that has been upgraded for tourists. Our room was in a separate building past the small garden. Although our room was small it was very small, we were very comfortable. The bathroom was fantastic - the bathroom fixtures were upscale European imports. The shower had plenty of hot water. I spent some time in the kitchen and was impressed with the standards maintained in it. Everything was freshly prepared and was delicious. It turned out that our meals there were the best that we had during our tour of Bhutan - homemade bread made from grains grown on the property, homemade prune preserves, homemade buckwheat noodles - again from grains grown on the property. The owners were very friendly and worked to ensure that all guests were comfortable and enjoyed their stay. We considered our stay to be have been a special experience - a stay at a late 19th century Bhutan feudal estate.

A real gem in a magical valley

This ancient manor is situated on the hillside of the picturesque Tang Valley. I spent many hours enjoying the views of the villages and fields and the majestic valley. There is an extremely interesting museum showcasing local culture and the old ways of life at the manor, and there is a full-sized temple with exquisite murals and altars. The newly renovated rooms have modern amenities, and the owner couple are simply delightful. I simply cannot recommend this place highly enough!

The best traditional palace in Bhutan

Ogyen Choling is a haven of peace and kindness. Run by Ashi Kunsang and Walter, wonderful hosts, the newly renovated guest rooms are excellent with the best bathrooms in Bhutan. The palace has a very old Tibetan temple where one can meditate and immerse himself in Tibetan Buddhism. There are also lovely walks to famous hermit caves. Last but not least, the food is delicious with a subtle mix of Bhutanese and Swiss cuisine. Ogyen Choling, in the lovely Tang valley, is The Gem of Bhutan and my favourite destination.

Beautiful Remote Place to Experience Bhutan

This is one of the more interesting places I have stayed in the world. Kuzang Choden, and her husband, are wonderful hosts, who help you understand the history and culture. You can feel a spiritual connection in this place. You can feel the history. The buildings and land are stunningly beautiful. Bring a camera. Bring a meditation cushion. You will leave with great memories. You will leave with a better understanding of Bhutan.

A true escape for the western mind!

Ogyen Choling Heritage House is less than an hours calm and scenic drive from Jakar town in Central Bhutan. I have visited Ogyen Choling twice, firstly in a group and this year as a solo traveller. If you desire a true break from the western mindset and to immerse yourself in a deeply beautiful culture that is off the tourist trail, Ogyen Choling will provide you with a place that is so relaxing you won't want to leave. Give yourself time to explore the fascinating museum at the heart of the village and to simply sit and stare at the views. Warm and comfortable Bhutanese rooms provide both comfort and charm. The showers are hot! I had a very memorable breakfast on my first visit of homemade yogurt, bread and jams, honey, eggs, buckwheat pancakes and more. It was a noticeable contrast to the breakfasts in the tourist hotels that try and cater to a very conservative and not very healthy western palate. Instead of driving out of the village ask your guide to walk with you down to the river on the valley floor. Its a great way to ease yourself out of such a beautiful place and it gives you the opportunity to interact with the locals.
